Hikkim and Komic Village
After the journey to Spiti Valley, I started for the further journey, when I talked to some of the residents here, I came to know that there is a village named Hikkim and Komic Village nearby where The world’s highest post office is situated. I was also filled with excitement after hearing this, I felt that I might be missing a lot, but if I had not come here, my journey might not have been complete. I put my backpack on my back and headed for Hikkim and Komic Village. But the village was very beautiful and surrounded by valleys, as soon as I came to this village, first of all I started asking people about The world’s highest post office. I had heard about it from many people and I am very happy to reach here today, whenever you come here, you must come here, the air here, the people here, the valleys here, the mountain here will fascinate you, back to your home, your city. This beautiful place will not stop you from going, it is nothing less than a dream. We have seen mountains made in many cartoon movies in our childhood, but it is even more interesting to see it with our eyes.
I came to The World’s Highest Post Office and met Rinchen Chhering, the postmaster here.
He is the oldest postmaster of the post office here, he has been working continuously for about 37 to 38 years in this post office. He is working here as Branch Postmaster.
At an altitude of 14567 feet, Spiti’s Hikkim Village has the world’s highest Postoffice. Neither signal nor internet is available here. So this post office is the only source of communication. And for the local people, it is not just a post office but a bank too. From letters to money orders, it’s all here. And you can post from here, not only in India but anywhere in the world. Rinchen ji, who is the postmaster here. His house is also this post office, where he lives with his family. Even since the post office was built, Rinchen ji is working here. Now at the highest post office to post is a blessing. And from here he goes up to 12 kilometers by foot for delivery of the post.
Komic Village – Spiti Valley is a very cold and deserted valley. Where probably you will get to see trees because there is neither much rain here nor is the temperature at such a high height such that the tree can grow. And people do farming even in such cold places. This is the world’s highest village named Komic. Komic Village at 15000 altitude is the highest village in the world, connected by a motorable road. And only 60 people live here. Barley and peas are cultivated here. The people here are very lovely, when I reached here, the people here welcomed me in a very beautiful way. Here you go to any house, you are given food, water and everything as a guest, you will feel that maybe you have come to your village and all these people know you from childhood, these people are very sweet and kind, I am here Stayed for about 3 to 4 days and I never felt that I have come here as a guest, this place is starting to feel like my village, maybe if you come here, you will also feel this place like your village, the top of the mountains here But you can do meditation by sitting, this place is very beautiful and peaceful place for meditation, here you will find people doing meditation, but there is a danger here, that snow leopard is seen here sometimes. But they are very dangerous, who come to this village to eat small animals.
Mud House – Apart from these farms, the second interesting thing is these mud houses. Which keeps them warm even in the minus 30 degrees Celsius cold. Let’s look at them from the inside. Here is a drawing room which is also a kitchen. And the tandoor at the center of the drawing room is a lifeline during winter. By burning wood in it, it keeps the room warm and then it also serves as a store for cooking. Here in the bedroom, the ceiling here is slightly low in height and wooden to trap the heat in the room. There is also a prayer room, during winter they usually stay inside the home and also not able to do any work than they use to read this scripture.
Dry Toilets – There will be dry toilets in all the houses in this village. Which is also used for fertilizer. They use the toilet and then through some dry fertilizer on it, then it mixes out and gets dry. After some time they used this in farms. The wet toilet is not usable here because during winters the pipeline gets frozen, if they use water, the toilet will get blocked.
Langza – If ever you come to the post office then definitely go to Langza. Which is just 8 kilometers far from here. Here is the famous Buddha statue of Spiti. And without any doubt, this is the most beautiful village in Spiti.
